The Frankfurter Kunstverein’s mission is
to inspire critical discussion about contemporary art as a means of addressing
social-political and intercultural issues. Its central aim is to remove inhibitions
and cultivate confidence and understanding in dealing with art today. An
important aspect of this work is providing opportunities for “learning through
art.”
In May 2010, the Frankfurter Kunstverein
initiated the educational program SCHULSTUDIO,
which is oriented towards high school students. Since then the institution has
been cooperating with schools from the area on projects that are thematically
related to its current exhibitions and that span a period of several weeks.
Within this timeframe the young participants are guided by two art educators,
Susanne Hesse and Katja Schöwel, in their approach to selected topics. The main
thrust of the program is to engage in dialogue with young people who are
beginning to orient themselves in the world, in order to facilitate creative
processes and exchange in relation to contemporary art. Meeting and working
directly with young international artists provide a unique opportunity towards
this aim. Each project unit concludes with a public presentation of students’
work.

SCHULSTUDIO #3, students discussing their project
SCHULSTUDIO provides a comprehensive and
critical exploration of socially relevant issues and leads to a confident
approach to contemporary art and international and intercultural perspectives.
This is made possible through:
• leaning about artistic working methods originating
from different cultural contexts,
• engaging with different forms of
presentation and
media in contemporary art,
• taking a look behind the scenes of the
art world.
Student experiences are further developed
as:
• individual, actual works of art,
• reflections on the works produced,
• a public presentation of these works.
To ensure that the projects are relevant
to what the students are learning in school, the content is developed in
cooperation with participating teachers in relation to their lesson plans. The
length and dates of the project units are scheduled directly with interested
teachers.
In addition to these SCHULSTUDIO
programs, individual project days are offered in the context of an exhibition. Such
days may be scheduled individually.
